Sometimes the best things happen spontaneously. Like this show, my paintings, and my color choices. I don’t plan my paintings; I like the paintings to surprise me. That’s what you wanted to be? I listen the paintings and often ask them, “Who are you?” It’s a conversation on the canvas that is sometimes wild, rebellious, mostly casual, half-organized and always well structured. I go for unexpected marks, awkward color palettes, and a composition that’s off-centered but balanced. Those off-the-cuff, thrown together, dare devil decisions give the paintings life. At the same time, the paintings are held together by a set of rules, norms and formalities. I never worry about the paintings. The paintings always arrive, and they always arrive exactly how I expect—a little impromptu.
