Mary Burke
I gain inspiration from the woods that surround my home studio. Exploring various ways to interpret the natural world, I approach the 2D surface as a page from a naturalist’s workbook. I embrace all aspects of nature from atmospheric mists and water worlds to earthen flora. In images, marks, and thoughts, a mingling of abstract and figurative elements can be found. Random marks, splashes, or drips rest side-by-side deliberate and well-honed patterns and forms. I enjoy the apparent dichotomy of the geometric and organic working together. My arrangements bring disparate, yet related, elements together for interesting associations. Accident and intent work hand in hand as I apply various mediums.
Most work is acrylic paint, and sometimes graphite on canvas. The graphite is sealed with gel medium. There are no collaged images.
