Larry Simon - May Featured Artist
True wanderers leave maps aside and go where the sights, sounds and scents of unfamiliar places lead them. This is expressed by the word girovagare, the Italian verb meaning ‘to wander, to roam.’
Girovagare describes perfectly my travels as a photographer. I have never set out with an agenda of subjects to photograph. Rather, my curiosity guides me to unexpected scenes and objects which invariably invite me to take their picture. This has led me to make thousands of photographs in different times and places. This exhibit is about the unexpected, synchronous connection between some of those images, most of them made in unrelated places, many years apart.
It would be more intellectual to write that each image I make has a deeper meaning, a profound raison d’être. But this simply isn’t so. It is the randomness of discovery that excites me, the idea that around any corner in any city at any time, a great subject awaits.
